DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY MEDICINE

About the department:-

  • Community Medicine as a discipline is a branch of medicine which deals with the study of health and disease in the population in order to identify their health needs and plan, implement and evaluate health programs to meet these needs. 
  • Training in Community Medicine aims at nurturing Primary Care Physicians who can recognize and manage common health problems in the community. The primary objective being prevention of disease and promotion of health as it aims to provide comprehensive health services ranging from preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative services.
  • The department faculty is committed to educating medical students to be community responsive primary care physicians who meet the health care needs of the community and the country, including rural and medically underserved communities. The faculty aims to undertake quality teaching and skill-based training of students based on the prescribed curriculum incorporating traditional teaching methods, community based learning, case studies, demonstrations, problem-based learning, community based-projects, self-directed learning and other innovative teaching learning approaches.
  • The Department of Community Medicine is being gradually updated as per the guidelines of National Medical Commission (NMC) to train UG medical students into medical professionals capable of demonstrating knowledge and competence in primary health care, health promotion, disease prevention and its management and maintenance of the health of people.

  • The department is committed to become a centre of excellence through quality community oriented medical education, outreach services and community based research and envisages to provide comprehensive health services to the community.

Objectives:-

  1. To provide community oriented medical education to the undergraduate medical students 
  2. To create social physicians capable of providing comprehensive health care
  3. To provide preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative health services to the community
  4. To conduct socially relevant public health research and promote its application in health care
  5. To facilitate the implementation of National Health Programmes

Best practices in undergraduate teaching :-

  • Use of participatory approach for Family adoption programme from first year MBBS till internship. 

Services delivered through Rural and Urban PHCs :

(PHC Boothgarh situated 16 km from College and Urban PHC, Phase -I Mohali situated 1.5 km from college have been attached to the department for academic purpose to aid in teaching & training of undergraduate medical students vide Ends No. 21/01/2020-3H7/1141-47, dated 4/6/2021)

Activities at Urban PHC, Phase-I Mohali & PHC Boothgarh

  • Primary Health care activities – Diagnosis and treatment of minor ailments free of cost.
  • ANC Clinic- on every Wednesday- registration of ANC cases, health checkup and immunization of mothers.
  • Teaching & Training of heath workers and undergraduate students
  • Immunization clinic-On every Wednesday.
  • Health education / IEC – is provided to all OPD cases and to the community about diet, hygiene environmental sanitation and infectious diseases prevention
  • MCH & Family planning- distribution of oral contraceptives pills, condoms and insertion of Copper-T. Motivation of eligible couples for Vasectomy and Tubectomy.
  • Referral services- Referral of cases those who need investigations and surgery, hospitalization and cases of ANC for institutional delivery.
  • Maintenance of records- like OPD Register ANC Register, Copper-T Register, Oral pill register, condom register, Immunization register, drug register.
  • Celebration of National Health Days
